Gold directly below our room
|
8 of us share the same room |
All eight of us share the same windowless, plywood wall and ceiling room. Below are the 27 rock crushing machines known locally as “ball mills”. These ball mills turn and tumble long heavy iron bars inside a 80cm long by 40cm diameter thick steel drum. The tumbling bars crush the ore that is fed into it and expose the small gold deposits. Which over the space of the week can mount up to quite a sizable amount? This particular house, and there are 100’s like it, during the week we were there the miners released almost 1.5kg (3lb) of gold from the steady stream of rock ore that is poured into the cellar directly below our room. You can watch the progress unimpeded through one of the many gaps in the flooring that that generator fumes come up through into our room. I cannot even begin to describe the shattering noise of ceaseless crashing other than to say after a while you really do become accustomed to it and actually forget it’s there. We seemed to have automatically adapted to shouting and even sleeping undisturbed for a few hours is possible as Jo will confirm.

Above is only 3 of hundreds & hundreds of "Ball Mill" houses.
The gold is extracted from the ore in the red drums seen below |
Despite all these interesting aspects of a “missionary’s life”, we truly thank the Lord for this room and this family and their abundant hospitality to us. Nothing is a problem for them, they assist us every way they can, even rearranging the miner’s meal schedule so we can always be served first. Humbling, in the extreme.

Sleep catch up at every opportunity is encouraged |
