So
what is idolatry now? What form would it take? What would Yahweh consider
idolatry in the 21st century? Is this relevant in a post modern culture? The
answer may surprise you
Leading
to an upstairs room, recent builders had made an error in their calculations.
The main beam had to be set back, leaving an unusual shaped gap above the
staircase. This left a challenge as the rest of the wall had been plastered. A
new feature had to be introduced and a large antique plaster cast from Italy
was set into the wall to disguise the recess. The symbolism was religious and a
copy from one of the Renaissance sculptors.
Recent
visitors fleetingly saw this sculpture and asked the question “would I consider
that to be an idol”? because of the content of Gods Word. Truthfully I hadn’t
really thought about this. On closer inspection I was drawn to the detail and
the implication of the symbolism. I realised it was deeply offensive regarding
the relationship between this object and the reality of the scriptures. I had ‘
inadvertently’ brought an “idol” into the house. The guest offered to remove
it, as it was a large heavy and expensive object. The ‘sculpture’ was removed
and placed outside the property for several weeks as I wondered what to do with
it
Work
took me away for a month and on returning I realised the object was still
sitting there. That night I was woken up by aggressive banging on the door. I
went to the door and opened it thinking someone was needing attention. No one
there. Strange. This happened over the next several nights, usually about 3 or
4am. I realised this had a spiritual root. I prayed about this, but it
continued to happen
Several
days later i had a telephone call from an acquaintance, a mature Christian
doctor. I shared the story of the knocking at the door . They immediately
asked. “Have you removed anything from your property? I was a bit taken aback
and answered ‘Yes’ Well the spirit behind that object is trying to get back in.
Remove it and destroy it, they counselled.
With
the help of a friend we covered the object, and took it off the land. After
saying a prayer, repenting of bringing it into the home, we destroyed it. On
returning home, I went round the property anointing all the boundary lines with
oil and prayed the cleansing blood of the Lamb , Exodus 12 v 7. The noise
immediately stopped. No more knocking. The Holy Spirit later showed me a couple
of other items that needed to be removed. After I did this, my prayer life
again became much freer and peace in the home is tangibly His. lesson learned.
Proverbs 3 v 5 + 6
